Miami-Dade prom gives students with autism spectrum disorder a night to rememberWPLG Local 10

About 300 students with autism spectrum disorder from Miami-Dade County Public Schools celebrated a milestone Friday at a prom designed to give them the full high school experience — from dancing and dressing up to the crowning of a king and queen.

The event featured music, photo opportunities, and the same excitement found at any traditional prom, creating what many described as an unforgettable moment for the students.

“I love dancing, having fun with my friends, and seeing beautiful girls — as always,” said attendee Leo Everest. “This is my life.”

Teachers and organizers say the prom is more than just a party — it’s a celebration of inclusion, friendship and independence.

“This is absolutely my favorite event of the year,” said Yvette Feeney, a teacher at Coral Gables Senior High School. “I love that all the schools come together, and the students reconnect through friendships they’ve built in Special Olympics and other events. Just being here, all dressed up and ready to dance, it’s an amazing experience.

School officials say the goal is to ensure all students, regardless of ability, get to enjoy the same rites of passage as their peers — complete with formalwear, music, and memories to last a lifetime.
