A non-verbal 3-year-old boy being treated at an early educational facility in Coral Gables begged for help as his registered behavioral technician purposely inflicted pain on him, police said.
According to police, the whole thing was caught on camera and the 25-year-old technician is now facing a criminal charge. Police think there may be more victims.
According to Coral Gables police, Nicholas Rene Gomez was arrested on Monday. He worked at Prism Early Advancement Center, located at 245 Catalonia Ave.
The incident happened on Aug. 8, police said.
Police said a witness at the advancement center observed Gomez demonstrating “pain compliance techniques” on the boy by bending the his wrist against his will, which the witness said caused the child pain and discomfort.
According to police, when the witness tried to intervene after the child looked to her for help, Gomez told the boy, “Don’t look at her, she can’t help you,” before telling the witness, “He has to learn that no one is going to help him.”
After an investigation, officers arrested Gomez on a charge of child abuse causing no great bodily harm.
Officers said they are trying to determine if there are more victims or witnesses and asked anyone with information to call Coral Gables police at 305-442-1600.
