The Coral Gables Commission meeting on October 10, 2023, unfolded as a gripping saga, continuing the ongoing tension between two distinct factions within the city’s leadership.

Public Outcry: Maria Cruz and Billy Corben Speak Out

The meeting commenced with the usual formalities but took an unexpected turn during the public comments session. Long-time resident and community activist, Maria Cruz, didn’t mince words as she criticized Mayor Vince Lago for allegedly leveraging his position to promote his private business interests in real estate and construction. The accusations set the stage for an intense evening.

Filmmaker and documentarian, Billy Corben, followed with a fiery address. Corben took aim at the controversial annexation of the High Pines/Ponce Davis area, labeling it a “boondoggle.” He went on to challenge Mayor Lago to a lie detector test on his podcast, countering Lago’s claims of being paid by firefighters to discredit him. Corben, not one to back down, extended the challenge, proposing that Lago reciprocate by answering questions about his associations with Bill Riley, Alex Díaz de la Portilla, and real estate developer Rishi Kapoor. He concluded by urging an investigation by federal authorities into potential corruption within the City of Coral Gables.

Religious Undertones and Legal Threats: Tensions Escalate

Tensions flared as Lago dismissed Corben’s concerns and even called him Cohen (legal name). The exchange reached a boiling point when Corben retorted, highlighting religious undertones and prompting Lago to threaten future legal action.

Commissioner Fernandez Unveils Controversial Interviews

The meeting briefly returned to routine proceedings until Compensation of Mayor/Commissioners (Item E-5) was raised. Commissioner Ariel Fernandez brought attention to recent interviews where Mayor Lago disparaged his colleagues, implying they “live off their wives” and making misogynistic statements. A heated discussion ensued, leading to a 3-2 vote on the item, with Menendez, Fernandez, and Castro voting in favor.

Historic Censure: Mayor Lago Faces Official Disapproval

The unprecedented continued with Commissioner Menendez proposing a motion to censure Mayor Lago for publicly attacking colleagues and their families. In what is believed to be a historic move, the motion passed 3-2, marking the first time in Coral Gables history that a mayor has been officially censured.

High Pines/Ponce Davis Annexation Drama Continues

Returning from lunch, the spotlight remained on the High Pines/Ponce Davis annexation issue (Item F-2). Commissioner Fernandez revealed that a significant percentage of residents did not return petitions by the initial deadline. After debates and discussion, the annexation process was halted, effective October 10th, following a 3-2 vote.

A Resolution for Ethical Boundaries: Castro’s Proposal Sparks Discomfort

Adding to the tumultuous session was Item-F, sponsored by Commissioner Melissa Castro. The resolution aimed to restrict City Commissioners from engaging in business transactions with City employees and other commissioners. A moment of discomfort arose when Mayor Lago was accused of attempting to capture images of Castro’s computer screen. Lago’s response, “That’s not what I am doing. I’m bringing it closer to my eyes. I’m losing my eyesight.” , only intensified the strained atmosphere.

The October 10, 2023, Coral Gables Commission meeting will undoubtedly be remembered, just not for the right reasons.
