Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago faces recall effort

Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago has more problems than the alleged ethical violations he’s been bobbing and weaving over the last year. Now there is a recall effort to add to the list of his troubles. The last month has been busy in Coral Gables. From the firing of former Coral Gables City Manager Peter Iglesias, to accusations of intimidation of potential city manager candidates, to conflicts of interest with Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak and his relations with the University of Miami, the surprise hiring of a new city manager and now a recall effort to remove Mayor Vince Lago from office.

The petition’s website, LagoMustGo.com, highlights all the negative press in the last few months as reported by the Miami Herald. The recall effort is spearheaded by community activist Maria Cruz who is also the chairperson of End the Corruption political committee. Cruz who used to be friends with Lago has been critical of Lago after the alleged transgressions have come to light over that past year.

It doesn’t appear that Lago’s troubles will be going away any time soon. The new city manager, Amos Rojas, Jr., who was a former Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Regional Operations Center for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was brought specifically in to address the “Cesspool of corruption”, as Commissioner Kirk Menendez put it.

This story will be updated.
